Big Obsidian Flow |
If you haven't visited the Newberry Crater area, you should make it a priority. There are several campgrounds, two lakes, an 8000 ft peak, a nice waterfall and unique geographical features, most notably a big obsidian flow, creatively named "Big Obsidian Flow". There are a number of trails, to explore and several campgrounds. About half the sites at Paulina Lake campground are reservable. Prepare for dust and mosquitoes. The other campgrounds are first come, first serve. Last Labor Day, many campsites remained empty all weekend.
Paulina Lake Lodge and
East Lake Resort are located in the crater area and offer amenities like cabins, restaurants, boat rentals, coffee, and convenience stores. Paulina Lake Lodge is the opposite of smoke free.

Little Crater Trail |
Keep in mind that Paulina Lake is at around 6300 ft elevation. It gets cold at night.
We always have a Northwest Forest Pass on hand, which all of the day use facilities in the crater area require. You can buy one at the entry point to the monument area. $30 annual, $5/day. They will hand you a newspaper-like flier that has maps and information about the volcano.
